The main material is modelled as having uniform entered density through the non-glazed rectangular volume. Hardware, facings, lippings, adhesives, moisture variation, rebates, apertures other than entered glazing and construction voids are not separately modelled.

What the estimate uses

Dimensions supply volume; entered density supplies mass.

Measure the door leaf itself, not the frame opening. Width and height create the face area, while thickness converts the non-glazed area into a rectangular volume. Density in kilograms per cubic metre then converts that modelled volume into the main-material contribution. The Longden calculator record supports the practical page type, but this page states and tests its own arithmetic.

Density is not inferred from labels such as oak, MDF, hollow core or solid core. Those names can cover different constructions, facings, moisture conditions and internal build-ups. Use information for the exact product where available and preserve its origin in the density source note. If only a sample density is available, the print record should say so.

Glazing displacement

Remove the opening area before adding glass.

When glazing area is positive, the calculator subtracts that face area from the main material, carries the remainder through the entered leaf thickness, and adds glazing area multiplied by the entered glazing mass per square metre. The glazing area cannot exceed the full leaf area. A positive area without a positive glazing mass produces no result.

This is an area-based adjustment, not a detailed model of beads, cut-out reinforcement, glazing packers or multiple material layers. Combine several panes into one total area only when the same entered mass per square metre applies. Otherwise calculate and document their contribution separately before using the total in a wider job assessment.

Actual mass and product data

Prefer a direct value when one exists.

Check the exact door schedule, maker data sheet, doorset documentation or delivery information for a declared leaf mass. Where actual weighing is practical, use equipment with adequate capacity, keep the method consistent and record whether hardware, glass and loose fittings were present. Nominal dimensions may differ from measured dimensions, and an estimate cannot reveal concealed construction.

Keep both values if they serve different purposes: the calculated record shows its inputs and assumptions, while a measured or declared value records stronger evidence for that particular leaf.

Manual-handling limitation

Kilograms alone do not determine the handling plan.

The estimate does not set a universal lifting threshold. The HSE manual-handling record frames the process as avoiding hazardous handling where reasonably practicable, then assessing and reducing risk. The related assessment record considers the task, load, working environment and individual capability. Door size, grip, balance, route, stairs, wind, team communication and handling aids can matter alongside mass.

Use the mass record as one input to that broader assessment. Do not treat a rounded calculator display as permission for one person to move, hang or control the leaf.

Calculation method

The calculation methodology requires finite raw values and derived contributions. The page accepts 0.1 mm dimensions, 0.1 kg/m³ density, 0.001 m² glazing area and 0.1 kg/m² glazing mass increments. Below-minimum inputs or a calculated mass below 0.05 kg produce no record because the 0.1 kg display would serialize a positive contribution as 0.0 kg. Glazing area may be zero; glazing mass is then entered-but-unused.

Fixed worked example

762 × 1981 × 35 mm at 600 kg/m³

The face area is 762 × 1981 ÷ 1,000,000 = 1.509522 m². With no glazing, the whole face area remains in the main-material model. Multiplying by 35 mm and dividing by 1000 gives 0.05283327 m³.

Multiplying 0.05283327 m³ by the entered density 600 kg/m³ gives 31.699962 kg. The display formatter shows 31.7 kg, while the current record retains the unrounded calculation. No density is inserted into the live form.
