Field worksheet / hanging sequence

How to hang an internal door

Prepare the opening, decide the door’s observed handing, dry-fit the leaf, record the working gaps, fit the selected hinges, then check the swing and latch before any final adjustment. Treat every measurement as a job record rather than a universal rule.

Sequence + record

Direct answer / prepare first

Start with a known leaf and a stable opening.

Before lifting the door into place, clear the floor, protect the faces and edges, and arrange help if the leaf is awkward to control. Keep wedges, a straightedge, a pencil and the hardware instructions nearby. Confirm which face is intended for the room, where the latch edge belongs and whether the finished floor level is already present. A change of floor finish can alter the bottom condition, so note an unfinished floor rather than quietly treating it as final.

Measure the leaf and the opening as separate things. Check the width and height at more than one position and record visible twist, damage or loose parts before altering material. The door and opening measurement worksheet keeps those readings distinct. A merchant hanging guide provides one useful general sequence, but its example gaps and offsets are not standards for every product; see the dated Wickes hanging-guide record.

Read the instructions supplied with the leaf, lining, hinges, latch and any doorset before choosing tools or removing material. Check the maker’s limits for trimming, finishing, hinge type and edge preparation. This page organises observations and order of work; it cannot see the opening, the construction of the leaf or the fixing substrate.

Name what you are looking at

Leaf, lining, stops and viewpoint

The leaf is the moving door. “Door leaf” is also used as a named timber-doorset component in the Door & Hardware Federation source record. The surrounding assembly may be called a frame, lining or casing in different instructions. In ordinary lining language, the two upright pieces are jambs and the top piece is the head; terminology can overlap between publishers, so use the words printed on the exact product. The limited terminology evidence is recorded under Door Superstore’s frame-size source.

Stops are the narrow pieces that the closed leaf meets. Loose stops may be fitted or adjusted after the door has been checked, while a rebated frame already defines the closing face. Do not mistake an architrave—the decorative trim over the wall joint—for the surface that carries the hinge.

Declare the observer

Handing words become ambiguous when two people stand on opposite sides. Start by saying whether you are on the pull side, where the door moves towards you, or the push side, where it moves away. Then record whether the hinges appear on your left or right from that same position.

The worksheet below deliberately returns a full sentence. It does not turn the observation into a bare “left-hand” or “right-hand” code because supplier conventions and viewpoints can differ. Put the sentence on the job note, drawing or order query so another person can reconstruct the observation.

3. Which way does the leaf move?

Worked example — default entered choices

Plain-language handing description

Standing on the pull side, the hinges are on your left and the door moves towards you.

Dry-fit gap record

Write measured values only. No target gap or pass/fail threshold is supplied by this worksheet.

Top: ______ mmHinge edge: ______ mmLatch edge: ______ mmBottom: ______ mm

Assumptions register

Viewpoint: standing on the pull side. Visible hinge side: left. Movement: towards you.

The sentence describes one observer’s choices. It is not a universal handing code, hardware selection or inspection of the opening.

Dry fit / record, do not assume

Offer the leaf up and map the gaps.

Use wedges or a door lifter to hold the leaf in its intended closed position without forcing it against the lining. Check the top, both vertical edges and the bottom against the actual finished-floor condition. Record each measured gap and the position where it was taken. A single number can hide a taper, so note if the top changes from hinge corner to latch corner or if a side gap opens and closes down the height.

Working gaps are job values, not a rule invented by this page. Compare the record with the exact door or doorset instructions and the needs of the fitted hardware. Do not call a gap acceptable merely because it resembles an example in a general guide. If the leaf is larger than the opening, check the manufacturer’s trimming limits before planning removal; if it is smaller, record that condition rather than packing the hinge side to conceal it.

Check squareness by observation and measurement, not by assuming a new leaf is square or an old lining is straight. If the opening narrows, the head drops, the jamb moves when touched or the floor datum is uncertain, pause. Altering the leaf cannot resolve a loose lining, moving support or an unfinished floor decision.

Hinge boundary

Choose and position the hinges as a separate job.

Confirm the hinge type, quantity and instructions for this leaf and frame. Hold the door to the recorded datum, keep hinge knuckles on one aligned axis and check that the leaves close without binding. The complete marking, recessing, pilot-hole, fixing and transfer sequence belongs to the dedicated guide: fit and mark the hinges.

Fix / swing / latch / recheck

Test movement before treating the fit as finished.

With the hinge work completed to the selected instructions, support the leaf while initial fixings take the load. Open and close it slowly through the intended arc. Watch the hinge edge, head, latch edge and floor rather than concentrating on one corner. Stop if a screw pulls, a hinge leaf shifts, the knuckle axis bends, the door drops suddenly or the lining moves.

Close the leaf gently and compare the working gaps with the dry-fit record. A changed pattern is evidence to investigate: check that hinge leaves are seated as intended, fixings remain firm and the leaf is not being forced by a proud or deep recess. Do not remove material as a first response to a new rub.

Only after the swing is repeatable should the latch and strike be presented and checked. Mark from the actual latch position; do not make the door chase a pre-existing strike position without checking why they differ. Test the handle return, latch engagement and opening from both sides. Then return to the screws, hinge axis, gaps and stop contact for a final recorded pass.

Troubleshooting without guessing

Stop when the condition is outside the worksheet.

If a door rubs, misses the latch, springs open or drifts, keep the symptom and contact point in the record. Use the door-not-closing diagnostic sequence before planing an edge or moving hardware. It is easier to compare hinge movement, gap changes and latch height when the original dry-fit values remain on the sheet.

Pause the job for a loose or damaged lining, movement at the wall, severe twist, split leaf, uncertain load path, concealed services near proposed fixings or hardware that does not match its instructions. Get the relevant product information or competent help before continuing. A general page cannot decide the cause from a symptom.

Fire doors and doorsets need particular restraint. Do not use this generic worksheet as permission to alter one, change its hardware or declare its performance. Within the scope of official England guidance, an inadequate existing fire door requiring replacement should be replaced by a competent person and fire doors should be kept in good order; see the GOV.UK fire-door source record. Follow the exact doorset evidence and the responsibilities that apply to the building.
